Overview

What it is

Image Tools is a simple online tool for everyday image editing. It makes JPG, PNG and WebP files smaller, converts them between these three formats and changes their size. The images are processed in your browser and are not uploaded to a server. A public beta runs at images.nextapplab.net. The tool is not yet released as a finished product: its legal texts are under external review and its operation has not been fully approved.

Features

What the app already does

  • Compress

Makes JPG, PNG and WebP files smaller, with three levels or an optional target size such as 100 or 200 KB. PNG files are re-encoded losslessly.

  • Convert

Converts between JPG, PNG and WebP in every direction. When the target is JPG, transparent areas get a solid background.

  • Resize and crop

Changes the dimensions in pixels or by percentage, and crops an image in a crop editor.

  • Several images at once

Up to 10 images per run, 20 MB per file and 50 MB in total, processed one after another. The results can be saved one by one or together as a ZIP file.

  • Processed in the browser

Your images are opened and saved again inside the browser; the tool sends no image to a server. The website itself is delivered by a hosting provider, which sees ordinary request data such as your IP address.

Flow

The core flow

  1. Choose images

Drop JPG, PNG or WebP files onto the page or pick them from your device.

  2. Pick a setting

Choose the compression level, the target format or the new size.

  3. Save the result

Download each image, or all of them as one ZIP file.

Where it stands

State of development

Short and honest: what still stands between today's state and a release.

Still open

  • The legal texts are under external review, and several operational approvals are still open.
  • Only JPG, PNG and WebP are processed. HEIC, AVIF, SVG, GIF and animated images are recognised and rejected.
  • Saving an image again removes its EXIF and location data, but a file the tool hands back unchanged keeps them. Colour profiles can change.
  • Testing on Android devices and with very large images is not finished.
Availability

Availability and limits

Availability: Image Tools is in public beta at images.nextapplab.net. It is not yet released as a finished product, and its legal texts are under external review. We name no date for a completed release. Results can differ from the original in quality and colour, so keep your original files.
